When ASF volunteer Cynthia first found Big Papa, he needed more than the usual help provided through ASF’s Community Cat Program. He had an open wound on his neck that required treatment, along with the neuter surgery and rabies vaccination the program provides.
Cynthia trapped him and got him to our veterinary partner, Animal Aid, where he received the care he needed, made possible by ASF donors.
But his story didn’t end there.
Cynthia continued caring for Big Papa over the next several months as he recovered. Somewhere along the way, the cat who needed help became a much-loved fixture on her property.
Today, Big Papa is healthy, happy and, according to Cynthia, very comfortable with his new life:
“He is so spoiled now, weighs roughly 12 pounds, and is the sweetest cat.”
Big Papa is one cat, but his story reflects what ASF’s Community Cat Program is all about: giving people in our community the resources to help free-roaming cats while preventing more kittens from being born homeless.
Preventing Homelessness Before It Starts
ASF’s Community Cat Program provides free spay/neuter services for stray and feral cats in our community. Each cat also receives a rabies vaccination and ear tip, at no cost to the Good Samaritan helping the cat. Loaner traps are available with a small refundable deposit, and surgeries are performed at Tally Spay, ASF’s low-cost spay/neuter clinic.
The impact goes well beyond one cat. Spaying and neutering community cats means fewer unwanted litters, fewer kittens entering an already strained shelter system, and healthier community cat populations.
And sometimes, it means a cat like Big Papa gets a little extra help, and a pretty wonderful new life.
